About the HCC

The Hallowell Conservation Commission is made up ofnine citizensappointed by the Mayor. The HCC and its friends work to protect the many natural resources in the Hallowell community. We conduct educational efforts and trail clean-up days, provide environmental information to the Planning Board and City Council, and serve as advocates for natural resources in our community.

The Open Space Plan

At it's September, 2008, the City Council finalzed it's acceptance of Hallowell's first Open Space Plan with minor changes. Many of the recommendations, especially those regarding stream and wetland protection and low-impact development options, are still being debated in the context of Hallowell’s Comprehensive Plan process, so interested folks are encouraged to attend the Comp Plan meetings as well. Information about that process, including meeting dates and minutes can be seen at Planning Decisions website.

Two of their favorite places in the world are Vaughan Woods and Jamies Pond. A close third is the Hallowell "Res."

Hanger LLC Proposed Subdivison

Hanger LLC (aka Scott Cowger) has proposed a 37-lot subdivision on Outer Central Street near the center of one of the Priority Open Spaces identified in the Hallowell Conservation Commission's Open Space Plan. The HCC feels this project is inappropriate in time, place and manner and has provided comments to the Hallowell Planning Board describing our concerns.
